The Murphy Method - Beginning Fiddle Vol. 1 DVD - $29.95 + $2.75 S/H (US only)

This is my most recommended DVD for learning to play fiddle by ear. Jim Wood is the teacher on this DVD, and he also has a number of follow-up DVDs so that you can stay with the same teacher! This teaches a beginner everything they need to know, including how to hold the fiddle. He also has tapes on his fiddle so it is easy to follow what he is showing you. Songs include Cripple Creek, Cotton Eyed Joe, Salley Goodwin, Old Joe Clark, Shuffle Bowing, Boil Them Cabbage and Amazing Grace. Running time is 2 hours.

Book & CD. Softcover 96 pgs. This is a great book which includes written information on every song. Songs are written in standard musical notation with chords, and there are a whopping 59 tunes on the included CD. Arrangements include Old Time, Bluegrass, Contest, Western Swing, Cajun and Irish/Celtic music. For the intermediate player. Don't judge this book by the cover (which in my opinion is ugly and unimaginative) -- this is a great book!

Book with CD & DVD. 64 Pages. If you are wanting to learn how to play fiddle by reading music, this is probably the best book available. The accompanying CD includes both the fiddle part and backup accompaniment together. It starts out with all the basics, and then goes on to more challenging pieces. The arrangements of songs are very nice and true to the melodies, without being overly simplistic or too hard. Highly recommended.
