Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

This one sounds better than it looks! It features dyed hardwood pegs; dyed hardwood fingerboard; metal tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is great on the top, but all scratched up on the back and sides. There is an ugly repair in the rib right next to the neck (See Pic 1). Solid and ready to play, but not pretty. No cracks or repaired cracks. The top is medium to wide grain spruce, and the back, neck and sides are lightly flamed maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume, with a full bright tone quality. Good midrange and clear! Great for bluegrass or folk! You'll be getting a great deal on this one!

Comes complete with case and student bow with real horsehair.

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition, with lots of scratches, dents and dings overall. The top is medium to fine grain spruce, and the back, neck and sides are lightly flamed maple. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks, but there are a number of scratches in the top in the varnish that look like cracks. Vintage 4/4 Violin/Fiddle $395

Reference No. 3015

This old, German instrument is just what the beginning student needs! It is from the 1880's, and is in excellent condition! It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-3/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in very good condition, especially considering the age! It is a dark red varnish, with scratches, dents and dings present overall, but relatively few considering the age. Looking at the top, there may be a repaired wing crack, but it also may just be a thin line in the varnish. It is solid and is very hard to see. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks anywhere else. The center seam of the top is slightly off-center. I'm only mentioning this because it may look like a crack. This is just how the instrument was originally built, and it is solid. The top is medium to fine grain spruce, and the back is relatively plain maple. It has a beechwood neck. I would classify it as medium loud in volume with a bright tone quality. E string is slightly harsh, but this would make a great instrument for the beginning student that doesn't want to purchase a new instrument. Good for bluegrass, and very easy to play!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $425

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. There is a 1" repaired crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a crease in the ribs which would be original to the instrument when the sides were bent. See Pic 1. There is a tiny chip on one side of the scroll. See Pic 2. Please note that the striping on this instrument is not in the wood, but was done with flames (a common way of mimicking maple flaming during the time period this was made). I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. There is some warmth to the bass end, and it is fairly even across all strings. Good for bluegrass!

Does not include case & bow.

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is completely intact, but there is lots of wear! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There are a few chips in the scroll around a couple of the pegholes, but nothing that affects the integrity. See Scroll picture. There is a 3" repaired crack in the rib at the endblock. See End picture. Two of the corners of the top are chipped. See Pic 1. There is a 2" repaired soundpost crack in the top. See Pic 2. There is a 1" repaired crack in the rib to the right of the endblock. See End picture. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is solid and ready to play. Lightly flamed maple back, sides and scroll, and wide to fine-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a clear, bright tone quality. Good for bluegrass and Irish!

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920, from the Schoenbach region. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There are two well-repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired saddle crack on the treble side that is about 3-1/2" long, and a repaired 2-1/2 crack to the left of the fingerboard. No other cracks or repaired cracks. One corner of the top on the bass side has been chipped and is missing. This will not affect the tone or playability of the instrument. Instrument is solid and ready to play! Nice flaming on the maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume. It has a bright, clear tone quality.

Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $599
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 2632

Vintage American instrument made by the Jackson Guldane Company, probably 1940-50. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; vintage plastic chinrest; vintage ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and steel strings. Body length is 13-7/8". Overall length is 23-1/8".

This instrument is in very good condition. The entire instrument has been stripped and revarnished. Varnish job looks good. It is not overly thick, and I don't see any runs or drips. This was done a long time ago, and there has been quite a bit of play/wear to the instrument since then. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Mostly light wear around the edges, with one edge being a little more worn than the others. There is a varnish worn spot on the top of the instrument to the right of the chinrest where someone put their chin while playing the instrument. The only crack I see is a repaired 1/2" wing crack on the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. One rib has a small crease (See Pic 1), and another rib looks like maybe some touch-up work was done there (See Pic 2). Nicely flamed maple back and neck, finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. Nice deep tone on the G string. Great for bluegrass, folk, country or Irish music!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage American 4/4 Violin/Fiddle $650

Reference No. 1684

Here is a wonderful, American made instrument! Written on the inside: Made by Joe Martin, K.C., KNS. No date, but the varnish color is age darkened indicating this is an older instrument. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in good condition, with original antiqueing on the back and top. Relatively few scratches, dents and dings overall. The top is uniform and medium to fine grain spruce. Back, neck and sides are lightly flamed maple. There is a repaired, 1/4" wing crack on the treble f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a lot of scratches and some varnish loss around the neck/heel area. I believe this is original to the instrument, as the body itself is handmade, but the neck appears to be commercially made and had to be fit to the body. It is solid. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a nice, slightly bassy tone quality. Full tone and even across all strings. It is a rare find for quality vs. price, and this one has a great sound! I believe it would be good for all styles of music! Great for the collector, but sounds so good you will want to play it!

Does not include case or bow.

Wonderful, vintage fiddle made by Eduard Reichert. German, circa 1900. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and Dominant strings. Body length is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition with a number dents, dings and scratches overall. There are quite a few repairs to this instrument, but it is solid and ready to play. I see five repaired cracks in the top. This includes a 2-3/4" repaired crack to the left of the fingerboard; a 6-1/4" repaired crack to the right of the fingerboard that goes from the top of the treble f-hole to the top edge of the fiddle (right side of fingerboard); a 2" repaired crack that extends upwards from the treble f-hole; a 6" repaired crack to the right of the tailpiece that goes completely through the treble f-hole to the bottom edge; and a 1-1/4" repaired saddle crack over the endblock to the right of the tailpiece. There has been repair work done to the ribs at the endblock, and it appears that the top and back have been reglued at some point in time. I also see a 1/2" crack in the side rib (See Side picture). Instrument is guaranteed solid and ready to play. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce. The back is one-piece flamed maple. The neck and sides are also maple. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume with a slightly sweet and slightly bassy, full tone quality. Smooth and easy to play! Good for all styles of music.
