Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $320
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 2010

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, but there is lots of wear, especially under the bridge and on the sides of the scroll. Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There is a 4" repaired crack in the back, and there has been some work done to the button area. The button is intact, but there is a small gap in the seam. Two of the corners on the top are slightly chipped. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a slightly edgy, bright tone quality. Great student instrument for a fantastic price! Good for bluegrass, country and Irish!

Does not include case & bow.

Reference No. 2788

Here is another wonderful sounding, vintage instrument! Made in Germany and imported by William Lewis & Son. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in okay condition with lots of wear, dents, dings and scratches. There is a well repaired 7" crack in the top that runs from the saddle to the top of the treble f-hole. There is another 3" repaired crack that extends upwards from the same f-hole. There is a 4-1/2" repaired crack in the top that goes from the edge under the chinrest all the way to the bottom of the bass f-hole. The ribs have a repaired crack at the endblock. See End picture. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. This was probably a school instrument at some point in time, as the number "18" is scratched in the button. See Heel picture. The varnish is completely worn in the center on the ribs on the treble C bout. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a bright, clear tone quality. Not harsh or tinny. Really great sound for bluegrass! Easy to play and responsive!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $395

Reference No. 2731

Great student or step-up instrument, made in Germany ca. 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Instrument has been completely stripped and revarnished except for the scroll. The new varnish is dirty and antiqued looking, and matches the scroll perfectly. No runs or drips, and it is not heavy or thick. Lots of scratches and dings overall, mostly under the varnish. There are a number of repaired cracks in the top. Both f-holes have small, 1/4" repaired wing cracks. There are two repaired cracks that extend from the edge of top under the chinrest upwards about 4-1/2" for one (to the bass f-hole) and 3-1/2" for the other. There is a 1" repaired saddle crack. There is a 6" crack that runs from the top edge to the top of the bass f-hole. These are all nicely repaired structurally and cosmetically. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Two of the corners are chipped -- one on the back and one on the front. See Pic 1 and Pic 2. Instrument is guaranteed solid and ready to play! I would classify this one as loud in volume with a slightly sweet tone quality. A little bit on the bassy side. Great for all styles of music! Great value!

Does not include case or bow.

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. There is a 1" repaired crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a crease in the ribs which would be original to the instrument when the sides were bent. See Pic 1. There is a tiny chip on one side of the scroll. See Pic 2. Please note that the striping on this instrument is not in the wood, but was done with flames (a common way of mimicking maple flaming during the time period this was made). I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. There is some warmth to the bass end, and it is fairly even across all strings. Good for bluegrass!

Does not include case & bow.

It features ebony pegs; dyed hardwood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition with dents, dings and scratches consistent with age. Light to moderate wear around the edges. There are a number of repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired 7" bass bar crack, a 1" repaired wing crack on the treble f-hole, and a 4" crack that runs (crooked) from the top edge under the tailpiece to the bottom of the bass f-hole, a 1" repaired crack that extends upwards from the bass f-hole, and a repaired 2" crack to the right of the tailpiece. Vintage American instrument made by the Jackson Guldane Company, probably 1940-50. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; vintage plastic chinrest; vintage ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and steel strings. Body length is 13-7/8". Overall length is 23-1/8".

This instrument is in very good condition. The entire instrument has been stripped and revarnished. Varnish job looks good. It is not overly thick, and I don't see any runs or drips. This was done a long time ago, and there has been quite a bit of play/wear to the instrument since then. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Mostly light wear around the edges, with one edge being a little more worn than the others. There is a varnish worn spot on the top of the instrument to the right of the chinrest where someone put their chin while playing the instrument. The only crack I see is a repaired 1/2" wing crack on the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. One rib has a small crease (See Pic 1), and another rib looks like maybe some touch-up work was done there (See Pic 2). Nicely flamed maple back and neck, finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. Nice deep tone on the G string. Great for bluegrass, folk, country or Irish music!

Vintage American Ram's Head Violin/Fiddle $685
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 2197

This is a very unusual, American instrument with a ram's head scroll. Made by Clarence Clemmerson in Cataract, WI. Dated 1963 (handwritten on label). It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; plastic chinrest; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; German Teller bridge; and D'Addario Helicore strings. Body length is 14-1/8". Overall length is 23-3/4".

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, though the varnish on the back is not as thick as the rest of the instrument. It may have been partially stripped. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks, but there are a few patches. I believe these are original to the instrument and were placed in areas of the wood where there were knots or other grain issues. I see three of them, and have included pictures of them as Pic 1, Pic 2, and Pic 3. There is a scratch in the top under the tailpiece from the fine tuners. Back and sides are a beautiful, tightly flamed maple, and the top is very wide-grained spruce. Better than simply folk, this instrument is sound and nicely made. Fingerboard is very thick, which makes for a thick neck overall. Top has nice arching, with fluted f-holes. It is very smooth playing and responsive. I would classify it as medium to medium loud in volume. Good for all styles of music. This would be a good addition to any American fiddle collector, but would also play nicely.

Does not include case or bow.

German Stainer copy, ca. 1890. It features hybrid ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; wooden chinrest; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and upgraded Prim strings. Body length is 14-1/8". Overall length is 23-1/2".

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, but has been completely clear-coated. This is a matte finish and there are tiny shiny spots overall, especially where there are little dings. Overall, it is very nice looking! There is some chipping around the pegholes and a few places on the edges. Very little wear to the edges. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. There has been some work done to the ribs at the endblock. Looks like it was reglued at some point. There is also a dent to the ribs there. See End picture. The bridge is slightly forward on this instrument to keep the scale at 13". (This is a long-scaled instrument otherwise, though it is full size.) Nicely flamed maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud in volume, with a bright and clear tone quality. Responsive and easy to play. Good for all styles of music.

There is a 6" repaired soundpost crack in the top. There is also a tiny, 1/4" wing crack on the bass f-hole. There is a repaired crack that runs through the D peghole. It has been bushed. This is one of my absolute favorites! Fantastic tone quality and projection, along with beautiful carving on the back of the scroll! This German instrument was made around 1900. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; plastic chinrest; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and upgraded Evah Pirazzi strings. Body length is 14". Overall length is 23-1/2".

This instrument is in good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, but there a lot of scratches, dents and dings overall. There is heavy wear along the edges. There are a number of well repaired cracks on the top, including a bass bar crack that goes the entire length of the top (From under the tailpiece, splits 1/8" over before reaching the bridge, and then to the f-hole. Then it goes from the top of the same f-hole to the top edge of the instrument). See Pic 1. There is a repaired 8" crack that runs right next to the center seam from the end block to right up under the bridge (centered). There is a repaired 2" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece. There is a repaired 2" crack from the top edge on the right side of the fingerboard (almost under the fingerboard). There is a cheek patch on the A peghole. See Pic 2. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is guaranteed solid and ready to play. Take a look at the back of the scroll. It has a beautiful carving! Back is nicely grained maple, and the top is wide to fine-grained spruce. Nice thin neck! I would classify this one as loud in volume with a full tone quality. Moderately bright, but well tempered and even across all strings. Great projection without being obnoxious. This is one of my personal favorites in all price ranges! Great for bluegrass, country, folk or Irish! You will love this one!

Beautiful red violin! Made in Germany, ca. 1964. It features geared, Caspari (Roth) pegs; ebony fingerboard; plastic chinrest; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and upgraded Super Sensitive Red Label strings. Body length is 14". Overall length is 23-1/2".

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in good condition, but there a lot of scratches, dents and dings overall. There is moderate wear along the edges. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. This has the A pitchpipe end button, but it doesn't make a sound anymore. Beautifully flamed maple back, sides and neck! Otto Bruckner label says made in Markneukirchen, but this was actually more likely made in Mittenwald or Bubenreuth. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a bright and clear tone quality. Great bluegrass fiddle! Also good for folk or Irish. Lovely instrument with a great sound!

Great sounding instrument and easy to play! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a full, moderately bright tone quality. Nice depth and very responsive. A pleasure to play! You will enjoy this one! Good for all styles of music!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage American Violin/Fiddle $950
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 778

Nicely made, vintage American instrument. Mady by M.G. Littlefield, circa 1936. It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/4".

Overall condition is very good. The original varnish is in fair condition. It looks like this instrument got hot and the varnish melted and/or stuck to something in the case. The top is okay for the most part, but the back and sides have a lot of crackling, wear and other imperfections due to heat. Light wear around the edges. I see no cracks or repaired cracks. The ribs do have some crack-like lines in them from when the wood was bent originally. See Pic 1. The name "Ernest" has been painted in gold on the side of the instrument. See Pic 2. (This could be removed if desired. I believe it is original to the instrument, though, so we left it.) The center seam in the back may have also been reglued. There is a cleat on the inside. The ribs have been reglued at the end block. Great for the player or for the American fiddle collector! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a nice tone quality. Warm and full. Beautifully made instrument with a great sound!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $1000
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 720

Beautiful Amati copy made by Martin. Saxony, Germany, circa 1900. It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; German teller bridge; and Dominant strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. The original varnish is in fair condition, with wear and numerous dents, dings and scratches overall. Moderate to heavy wear to the edges. There is a 3" repaired crack in the top to the right of the tailpiece. There is also a 1-1/2" repaired crack to the right of the fingerboard. Both are solid repairs. Nice, high arching on the top and back, which is indicative of Amati. Beautifully flamed, one-piece maple back! Finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this instrument as loud in volume. Good tone quality, full and clear. Nice depth and good bass end. Good for all styles of music. Beautiful instrument in great condition!

Does not include case or bow.
