Bluegrass Shack Productions has one of the finest selections of fractional and full size violins and fiddles over the internet. All of our instruments come set up and ready to play, and there are sound clips of each one for you to listen to. We are currently in the process of photographing and recording our vintage fiddles, which number over 500 in all, so if you don't see what you are looking for, feel free to contact us. Most of our vintage fiddles start at $300.

We do carry new cases (starting at $50 with purchase of instrument) and bows (starting at $25 with purchase of instrument) and can get you a price quote upon request.

Bluegrass Shack Productions wants you to be satisfied with your purchase. If you are looking for a fiddle and you don't know what size to order, or if you aren't sure if you should buy new, used, or vintage, take a look at this information from the LearnBluegrass website.

One of the most frequent questions we get asked is, "What is the difference between a fiddle and a violin?" There is no difference in the instrument at all. The setup of the instrument might be slightly different, such as a different brand of string or a different bridge curvature. Usually classical players refer to the instrument as a violin, and bluegrass, country and folk musicians will refer to it as a fiddle. Your purchase will work for any style of music!

If you save your receipt, you will also be able to trade in your fiddle for a different size (for children starting on a less than full size instrument) or for a more expensive one later on. We offer great trade-in values, many times giving you the full amount you paid for your instrument when it is returned to us in good condition with the original receipt.

Instruments may be purchased using a credit card or your checking account through PayPal. This is free for buyers. You may also call us with your credit card number. If you would like to purchase with a check or money order, please contact us at BluegrassShack@aol.com for instructions. Thank you and happy looking!

I would classify it as loud to very loud in volume with a wonderfully full and mature sound! Even across all strings, very responsive, and slightly deeper tone quality. One of my favorites in this price range!

Nice, deep sounding instrument here, and a beautiful, one-piece maple back! It features ebony pegs with Parisian eye; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with Parisian eye and four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in very good condition with few scratches and dings overall. The varnish does have a few defects in it. They are air pockets that are on one side (see Pic 1). These are cosmetic in nature. There is a 1/2" repaired crack in the top that extends downward from the treble f-hole. No other cracks or repaired cracks. The top is wide grain spruce, and the back is nicely flamed, one-piece maple. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a deep, bassy tone quality. Very mellow and very forgiving. Great for any style of music.

I love the tone of this one! I am guessing it to be around 25 years old. It features ebony pegs; dyed hardwood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-1/4", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in very good condition with a fair number of scratches and dings overall. There are scratches/gouges under the tailpiece in the top from the fine tuners. There is a 1/2" repaired wing crack on the treble f-hole. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. The top is medium grain spruce, and the back is lightly flamed maple. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a full, deeper tone quality. Nice, mature sound that is well-rounded. Great for any style of music. One of my favorites in this price range! Note: This outfit includes a used tuner and shoulder rest. The zipper pocket on the case is missing the zipper pulls; however, the zipper itself actually works fine.

This is a way cool, old German fiddle! Circa 1870 with a beechwood neck! It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 13-15/16", with an overall length of 23".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition, but it is very thin and has a lot of wear. I see no cracks or repaired cracks. The purfling is painted, and in some areas it is not visible due to wear. The one-piece back and the sides have faux flames that ARE actually created by heat or a flame. These are original to the instrument and is a known technique. Top is wide to medium grained spruce. Neck is beechwood. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a brighter tone quality.

Includes used case and bow.

Here is another wonderful sounding, vintage instrument! Made in Germany and imported by William Lewis & Son. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/4".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in okay condition with lots of wear, dents, dings and scratches. There is a well repaired 7" crack in the top that runs from the saddle to the top of the treble f-hole. There is another 3" repaired crack that extends upwards from the same f-hole. There is a 4-1/2" repaired crack in the top that goes from the edge under the chinrest all the way to the bottom of the bass f-hole. The ribs have a repaired crack at the endblock. See End picture. I see no other cracks or repaired cracks. This was probably a school instrument at some point in time, as the number "18" is scratched in the button. See Heel picture. The varnish is completely worn in the center on the ribs on the treble C bout. See Pic 1. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a bright, clear tone quality. Not harsh or tinny. Really great sound for bluegrass! Easy to play and responsive!

Does not include case or bow.

Great bluegrass fiddle here! It features ebony pegs with Parisian eye; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with Parisian eye and four fine tuners; ebony chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Original varnish is in okay condition with lots of scratches overall and some very light alligatoring of the varnish. This is purely cosmetic and doesn't affect the tone quality of the instrument at all. No cracks or repaired cracks. The top is medium grain spruce, and the back is a beautiful, one-piece maple that is highly flamed. Absolutely gorgeous! I believe this is probably 10-15 years old. I would classify it as loud in volume with a full, even tone quality. Really great sound for bluegrass, and this one practically plays itself! PLEASE NOTE: This instrument is 7/8 size, which means the body is full size, but the scale length (from nut to bridge) is slightly shorter than full size. This makes the instrument ideal for people with shorter fingers.

Includes used case and bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $425

Nice German instrument here, circa 1900. Beautifully flamed maple back! It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. The original varnish is in fair condition on the top (with lots of scratches, dents and dings), and in very good condition on the back. Beautiful flaming on the maple back and sides. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce. There are several repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired 3-1/2" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece, and a repaired 7" crack directly under the the tailpiece, which is solid but ugly. The edges are not quite matched up. See Pic 1. There is also a repaired 3" crack in the top to the left of the fingerboard that goes from the edge downward, and a repaired 2-1/2" crack on the treble edge of the top, lower bout. There is a solid repair to the button on the back, and it does look like the neck has been reset. I believe the back and top have been removed and reglued at some point in time. There is a tiny dimple in the fingerboard, completely cosmetic in nature. See Pic 2. I have also photographed several other cosmetic flaws in Pic 3 & Pic 4. Instrument is solid and guaranteed ready to play. Nice bassbar inside. Well-balanced instrument and even across all strings. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. It is not harsh, and the E string is well-balanced to the rest of the instrument (not standing out). This would be a great student or step-up instrument, and I believe it would be suited for all styles of music. It is a beautiful instrument!

Does not include case or bow.

Nice student instrument, made in Germany around 1900. It features ebony pegs; rosewood fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is very worn! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with heavy edge wear. There is a 1" repaired crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. There is a crease in the ribs which would be original to the instrument when the sides were bent. See Pic 1. There is a tiny chip on one side of the scroll. See Pic 2. Please note that the striping on this instrument is not in the wood, but was done with flames (a common way of mimicking maple flaming during the time period this was made). I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a moderately bright tone quality. There is some warmth to the bass end, and it is fairly even across all strings. Good for bluegrass!

Nice student instrument, Stainer copy, made in Germany around 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; wooden chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 24".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is completely intact, but there is lots of wear! Lots of scratches, dents and dings overall, with quite a bit of edge wear. There are a few chips in the scroll around a couple of the pegholes, but nothing that affects the integrity. See Scroll picture. There is a 3" repaired crack in the rib at the endblock. See End picture. Two of the corners of the top are chipped. See Pic 1. There is a 2" repaired soundpost crack in the top. See Pic 2. There is a 1" repaired crack in the rib to the right of the endblock. See End picture. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is solid and ready to play. Lightly flamed maple back, sides and scroll, and wide to fine-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud in volume with a clear, bright tone quality. Good for bluegrass and Irish!

Nicely antiqued German instrument with a one-piece maple back! Circa 1930-40. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; metal tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-3/16", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition. There are a number of dents, dings and scratches overall, but it is hard to tell which ones are from wear and which ones are original to the antiqued varnish. It is a great looking, vintage instrument with a nice patina. I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. Top is medium to wide-grained spruce, and it has a lightly flamed one-piece maple back, sides and neck. I would classify this one as medium in volume with a more mellow tone quality. It would be good for all styles of music.

Vintage Czech, ca. 1920, from the Schoenbach region. This instrument features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. The body is 14-1/8", with an overall length of 23-3/8".

Overall condition is good. Original varnish is in good condition, though it does have a lot of chips, dents, dings and scratches. Moderate to heavy wear on the edges. There are two well-repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired saddle crack on the treble side that is about 3-1/2" long, and a repaired 2-1/2 crack to the left of the fingerboard. No other cracks or repaired cracks. One corner of the top on the bass side has been chipped and is missing. This will not affect the tone or playability of the instrument. Instrument is solid and ready to play! Nice flaming on the maple back! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume. It has a bright, clear tone quality.

Vintage American instrument made by the Jackson Guldane Company, probably 1940-50. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; vintage plastic chinrest; vintage ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; and steel strings. Body length is 13-7/8". Overall length is 23-1/8".

This instrument is in very good condition. The entire instrument has been stripped and revarnished. Varnish job looks good. It is not overly thick, and I don't see any runs or drips. This was done a long time ago, and there has been quite a bit of play/wear to the instrument since then. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Mostly light wear around the edges, with one edge being a little more worn than the others. There is a varnish worn spot on the top of the instrument to the right of the chinrest where someone put their chin while playing the instrument. The only crack I see is a repaired 1/2" wing crack on the bass f-hole. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. One rib has a small crease (See Pic 1), and another rib looks like maybe some touch-up work was done there (See Pic 2). Nicely flamed maple back and neck, finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. Nice deep tone on the G string. Great for bluegrass, folk, country or Irish music!

Does not include case or bow.

This instrument is in very good condition. The original varnish is in very good condition with dents, dings and scratches overall. Only light wear to the edges. There are a couple of well-repaired cracks in the top. This includes a 1-1/2" repaired saddle crack, and a 1-1/2" repaired crack that extends downward from the top edge of the instrument to the left of the fingerboard. All is cosmetic in nature and this instrument is solid and ready to play. Top is fine grained spruce, and the back is lightly flamed maple. I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a moderately bright tone quality. It is smooth and easy to play. Even across all strings. Nice deal on an American made instrument!

Very sweet sounding, vintage German instrument, circa 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Moderate to heavy wear around the edges. Top is medium to fine-grained spruce, and the back, neck and sides are flamed maple. Great condition for its age! Looks like it has a tiny, 1/4" saddle crack over the endblock area (repaired), and a repaired split that runs parallel to the fingerboard on one side. I would imagine this happened when the fingerboard was replaced years ago. It is solid and does not affect the stability of the instrument at all. See Pic 1. There is a scratch in the varnish on the top coming up from the bass f-hole. This looks like a crack in the picture, but it is not. I would classify this one as medium in volume with a very sweet, mellow tone quality. Very easy on the ears! Good for all styles of music as long as you don't need loud volume.

One-piece back on this nice, vintage Czech instrument (Bergonzi style), circa 1890. It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14-1/4", with an overall length of 23-1/2".

Overall condition is excellent. Varnish is antiqued, which is original to this instrument when it was made. It is in good condition with some dents, dings and scratches overall. Light to moderate wear around the edges. I see one repaired saddle crack in the top that is about 2" in length and is mostly hidden by the chinrest. Top is medium-grained spruce, and the back, neck and sides are maple. Back is one piece. Great condition for its age! I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a full, moderately bright tone quality. Clear overall, and even across all strings. Good bass end, but not bassy overall. Vintage German Martin Violin/Fiddle $925
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 1769

What a great deal on a wonderful sounding E. Martin! This was made in Germany around 1890. Beautiful wood on the one-piece back! It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is good. The original varnish is in fair condition. It looks like this instrument got hot and the varnish is crackled but not flaking. Lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Heavy wear to the edges, with some chips. There are a number of well repaired cracks in the top, including a repaired 5" saddle crack to the left of the tailpiece, a repaired 1" saddle crack to the right of the tailpiece, repaired 1/2" wing cracks on both f-holes (two on the bass f-hole), a repaired 4-1/2" crack extending upwards from the bass f-hole, a repaired 3-1/2" crack to the right of the fingerboard, a repaired 2-1/4" crack to the left of the fingerboard, a repaired 1-1/2" crack extending downwards from the bass f-hole, and another repaired 1" crack to the right of the tailpiece. I don't see any other cracks or repaired cracks. Instrument is guaranteed solid and ready to play! Nicely flamed one-piece maple back, and nicely flamed neck. Top is fine-grained spruce. Great sounding instrument and easy to play! I would classify this one as medium loud to loud in volume, with a full, moderately bright tone quality. Nice depth and very responsive. A pleasure to play! You will enjoy this one! Good for all styles of music!

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Hopf Violin/Fiddle $950
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 1693

Love this old Hopf! Beautiful look and great sound! It features ebony pegs; ebony fingerboard; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; and steel strings. Body length is 14", with an overall length of 23-1/8".

Overall condition is very good. Original varnish is in good condition with lots of dents, dings and scratches overall. Light to moderate wear around the edges. Top is fine-grained spruce, and the back, neck and sides are flamed maple. Great condition for its age! I don't see any cracks or repaired cracks. I would classify this one as loud in volume with a full, mature tone quality. Clear but not overly bright, great depth and just enough bass to round it out. I personally love this one! Smooth and easy to play. Great for bluegrass, folk or old time music.

Does not include case or bow.

Vintage German Violin/Fiddle $1000
INCLUDES SHIPPING/Insurance (US mainland only)
Reference No. 720

Beautiful Amati copy made by Martin. Saxony, Germany, circa 1900. It features an ebony fingerboard; ebony pegs; ebony tailpiece with four fine tuners; plastic chinrest; German teller bridge; and Dominant strings. Body is 14-1/8", and the overall length is 23-1/2".

Overall condition is very good. The original varnish is in fair condition, with wear and numerous dents, dings and scratches overall. Moderate to heavy wear to the edges. There is a 3" repaired crack in the top to the right of the tailpiece. There is also a 1-1/2" repaired crack to the right of the fingerboard. Both are solid repairs. Nice, high arching on the top and back, which is indicative of Amati. Beautifully flamed, one-piece maple back! Finely-grained spruce top. I would classify this instrument as loud in volume. Good tone quality, full and clear. Nice depth and good bass end. Good for all styles of music. Beautiful instrument in great condition!

Does not include case or bow.
